Another year, another new National Day song  and another round of criticism and some parody of it plus some other Singapore proud composer and singers who decide to write their own.

What makes a good Singapore birthday song?  The song should bring a lump to the throat and maybe even a tear or two. And this song, certainly did.

What make a Singapore birthday song? I like this not so official one I think. Fun and a bit irrelevant but not the rousing type. This one don't make the cut but it's worth a listen.

What makes a Singapore birthday song? This official "unofficial" version from the people at Pungol who decided to pen their own version. Good effort by all the VIP including the now so famous Yam Ah Mee. Close but somehow it lacks that little bit extra to qualify as our birthday song.

Certainly not this rip off.  Whatever possess the NDP organiser to take a pop song and rewrite the lyrics for their own?Not that it was ever contemplated to be one but thank goodness, some common sense prevail and we won't see this at the actual NDP although it will now live on forever as another blot on our little red dot.



Whoever approved this need to be thrown off the floating platform and fed to the sharks!

Exam is coming

Exam time is round the corner. It is a time of great stress as parents take leaves to make sure their children study and get into that 'top' school. Some parents are pleading with the gahmen to subsidy tuitions, some ask for a total ban on tuition to 'level the playing field'.

But is getting all A and getting into that top school really that important? Does job interviewers really care what T-score a prospect gets for his PSLE or what his L1R4/5 is? Do they really care which school or JC they went to? Surely, the goal should not be to get perfect scores or top schools but just to advance to that next level smoothly. Why ply on so much pressure on the kids? Are parents really thinking of their kids' future or living their own dream through their kids?

For me, I am contended if my kids can be happy with their own progress and not be too stressed with getting results. Nevermind if it is a B or C. After all, what we do with our life does not depend entirely on how well we did in school but what we want to do in life. At a recent class gathering 30 years after we left school,  while most of us are still slogging in the world force, 1 guy had sort of 'semi-retired'. In his own words, he is 'just taking it easy'. Actually, he is the most successful of us - having started doing insurance when he was in JC and thereafter running several businesses before he called it quits to spend more time with his family two years ago. And his academic qualifications? He funked his 'A' levels big time! Again in his own words, he just 'went to JC to pass the 2 years before doing NS'. So the point is, its not how many distinctions or which schools but what you want to make of your own life that counts!

And back to the parents. This video may be good for a laugh and a bit extreme.  Laugh but do stop to ponder. Are you on the verge of becoming like the father in the video?

The Singapore Song By Rony Tan

I like Corrine May but somehow her National Day song doesn't stuck a chord or gives that lump in the throat feeling. This is so much better but still not that rousing or have that catchy beat that makes one sing along. Give me those good old songs like Stand Up for Singapore or Count On Me Singapore anytime.

Uniquely Singapore 9 - Singapore My Home

So our little red dot has got its unique qualities. Sure, it doesn't have the beautiful rolling nature of New Zealand, the vibrancy of Hong Kong, the cleanliness of Japan but it does have one of the best airport, best port, most hardworking workers and a big long list of hard earned accolades and it is safe probably the safest country in the world. So yes I couldn't trade this place for any other countries because it is my country, my home.

Each year there will always be a National Day song - from the patriotic Count on Me Singapore to this year What Do You See. but notice 1 thing? Each year, the songs get more and more unsingable. Especially this year. What Do You See? I see money lor what do I see!

So what do you do when you die die cannot tahan the song? Write your own lor.

The taxi drivers do it all the time. The aunties also do it. The opposition loves to do it. What am I talking about? Complain and make fun of the gahmen of course. But nobody can do it better than our celebrities. Still got song and dance. How about an applause?

Uniquely Singapore 2 - National Disgrace

He is the epitome of crass. Of bengness. He with his spitting, his noise picking and ear digging. And they got this character to front the MRT courtesy campaign. Who else but the most famous and recognisable person in Singapore. And I not talking about a certain MM.
